American Legion Post 289 becomes chartered organization of ‘The First Ladies’

CLARKSVILLE, TN – BSA Scouts Troop 21 “The First Ladies” has been serving the youth of Montgomery County since February 1, 2019. As of March 1, American Legion CSM Gary W. Crisp Post 289 became the organization of the troop’s charter. .

Not only do these two organizations share common goals, but they also share leadership. Dawn Schmidt, former president of Auxiliary Unit 289, was instrumental in working with troop leadership for its first charter.

Douglas Kirby is the current Scouting Station President and Chrisie Moore is also a member of the Scouting Executive. Chrisie is a member of the American Legion’s Auxiliary Unit 289 and stepped down as the first scout leader to take on the role of organizational charter representative for the all-female troop. Additionally, Douglas Kirby is a longtime member of the American Legion. Doug currently oversees the post’s five scouting units.

Currently, Station 289 has the most licensed Scouting units in the American Legion Department of Tennessee, according to Ernest Schmidt, chairman of Scouting for the American Legion Department of Tennessee.

Some of the projects the American Legion Post 289 and the Boy Scouts have collaborated on include the annual 4 Chaplain Memorial Service, poppy sales at the Fort Campbell Post Exchange, and an Eagle Project to install a boat launch in the Billy Dunlop Park.
