Army frees female soldier detained for romantic engagement with youth body member

Major General Farouk Yahaya

December 25 (THEWILL) – The Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General. Faruk Yahaya ordered the immediate release of a detained female soldier, Hannah Sofiat.

Sofiat had previously been arrested for breaking military rules and regulations by getting involved in a public demonstration of a romantic relationship with a paramilitary trainee – a member of the corps.

She was arrested after video clips where she was seen accepting a marriage proposal from a male body member at NYSC orientation camp in Kwara, which went viral on social media.

His detention had however aroused reactions from Nigerians who believed that he should not be denied the right to love.

Several groups and individuals have urged the Nigerian military authorities to release the female soldier.

However, a reliable military source at the army headquarters said on Saturday that the army chief of staff intervened and asked for her pardon.

The source said SFOC made the decision in Christmas spirit.

He said Sofiat had been warned and reprimanded for breaking the current rule governing the conduct of military personnel; adding that the soldier had been forgiven and released from detention to join family and friends to celebrate Christmas.

According to the source, this is in line with SFOC’s vision to have a professional Nigerian army ready to perform assigned missions in a joint environment for the defense of Nigeria.

“The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces intervened in the affair. He asked for her to be pardoned. Military authorities reviewed the SFOC’s plea and said she would be immediately released. Before the end of the day, she should have been reunited with her family, ”the source said.

When contacted, the army spokesperson, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed this development. He said, “What you are told is correct.”
