Big Water Creative Arts offers a workshop for budding songwriters

PETOSKEY — A local nonprofit aimed at promoting the arts in the Great Lakes region will soon again be offering a songwriting workshop for aspiring songwriters in the region.

Big Water Creative Arts has partnered with the Crooked Tree Arts Center and local pianist and performer, Charlie Millard, to offer a four-lesson beginner songwriting course for students ages 12-18.

“The last one we did was with the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor, but that was before the pandemic,” board director Pete Kehoe said.

“Someone told us we hadn’t done anything like this in a while and were supposed to do two at Bay View, but both were cancelled. We’re excited to be back,” he said. -he declares. .

Local musician and performer Charlie Millard will lead the band and show the ins and outs of songwriting.

The upcoming workshop will help students learn the basic nuts and bolts of song making, song structure, and storytelling in three minutes while using as little storytelling as possible. a larger story – a “less is more” approach.

“We’ve wanted to work with Charlie for a while but he’s a busy guy and then of course the pandemic put things on hold,” Kehoe said.

“Charlie is a really talented guy and his group did something like this at Interlochen. We’re really excited to be doing this again with such a talented teacher,” he said.

The upcoming workshop has a minimum registration fee of $5 per student and all materials will be provided and minimum musical skills are required.

The workshop will take place over two weeks on Monday and Wednesday 16, 18, 23 and 25 May. All sessions will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Crooked Tree Arts Center Music Studio located on the lower level (first floor).

Registration is currently open and can be done either bigwatercreativearts.org or crookedtree.org.
