Canon Creates “Cinematic Storytelling in 180° VR” Workshop at Sundance Film Festival 2022

As part of the Sundance Virtual Film Festival, Canon has teamed up with virtual reality expert Matt Celia to host a workshop called “Cinematic Storytelling in 180° VR”.

Celia, co-founder and creative director of Light Sail VR, offers her best creative techniques and technical advice to filmmakers new to immersive entertainment. The intro, streamed in 180° virtual reality, presents great takeaways for cinematographers and directors looking to try out their first VR project.

Some of these tips include:

  • Be careful with the movement or you risk making viewers sick. Keep a level horizon and use a fluid, slow forward or upward motion.
  • Find creative ways to light your scenes. Hands-on can be great tools for adding dimension to your scenes. You can also paint the lights by drawing on clean plates.
  • Use 2D cameras to capture close-ups for picture-in-picture frames. This technique allows you to vary your framing when shooting in VR.
