A Griffith Youth Basketball Tournament is set to take to the streets on January 22, as a local musician returns to town. Aduny Takele, part of the band ‘Ballerz Down Under’, has returned to Griffith after a two-year stint in Melbourne producing music and video. Upon his return, along with his two producing partners, he decided to try and give back to the community he grew up in. Growing up in Griffith, he saw a lack of youth programs to engage young people in the community. and was motivated to start a street basketball tournament to let them know they’re not alone. “I wanted to do my part in any way I could,” Mr. Takele explained. “It all started with us making basketball videos and playing, we thought that was something that people could really be interested in, so we thought we’d do a bit of a tournament…this one will be a bit of a try.” He explained that a lack of programs for young people has caused them to become distracted and lose focus, sometimes causing them to back down as they step into the future. “The goal of the tournament is just to really create a community for the kids in this town. We really want to let them know that we’re here for you and that we’re going to help you in any way we can.” READ MORE “Whatever you wanted to do, just be a good person. Even the kind of people who aren’t as present, we try to find them.” Mr. Takele is already looking forward to seeing the tournaments take off, if the first experiment is successful. He hopes it will become a regular thing and says young enthusiasts should “be excited for what’s next”. The tournament kicks off on January 22 at Jubilee Park, with a barbecue available for spectators and a series of prizes from sponsor Cartel. The teams are composed of 5, including three on the field and two reserves. And for those following Mr. Takele’s music career, he added that there may be a single and a music video that night.
