A singer, teacher, pianist and composer of church music will lead a concert and workshop in Portland in late April.
Janèt Sullivan Whitaker has served continuously in ministry throughout the Diocese of Oakland, California since she was a child.
Whitaker and friends perform a 7 p.m. concert on Friday, April 29 at All Saints Church, 3847 NE Glisan St. A collection will be made and a portion of the proceeds will support those affected by war in Ukraine through Catholic Relief Services. and their partners through the Caritas International network.
Whitaker’s best-known songs, sung at liturgies around the country, include “Here at This Table”, “In Every Age”, “This is Our Cry”, “The Least of These”, “Christ Before Us” and “Day of Peace”. “His music is published by Oregon Catholic Press in Portland, which is the publisher of this journal, and by GIA/WLP in Chicago.
On Saturday, April 30, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Magdalen Parish in northeast Portland, Whitaker is leading a workshop titled “Community, Stewardship, and Hospitality: Through the Eyes of Liturgy.” The session will be held at the Old Church, 3123 NE 24th Ave. Live streaming will be available.
“In this spring of returning to in-person ministry, pastoral musicians are called to be a source of creative encouragement to those we serve,” said a statement from the Portland chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, which is one of the sponsors. concert and workshop. “Much of what we believe and share is formed and expressed in the liturgy. The workshop—$20 per person or $100 for a parish group of five or more—will include a continental breakfast and a prayer.
Whitaker holds a bachelor’s degree in music from California State University East Bay and a master’s degree in liturgical theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. She is partially retired from parish work and focuses on supporting, mentoring and continuing education for others who share a love for music ministry.
