AREA – Central Maine Community College’s (CMCC) Workforce and Career Development Center is offering free High Pressure Boiler Operator training May 25-August 31, 6-9 p.m. , and a free 608 refrigeration training from June 7 to July 28. 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Information and links to register for the program are available at https:www.bit.ly/CWPDRegistration. The High Pressure Boiler Operator training provides a hands-on approach, knowledge and techniques of power plant operation and is designed to prepare the student for the Maine licensing exam, which can be taken at CMCC . The course will give the student 450 hours out of the 900 hours needed to pass the exam. The remaining 450 hours will be required in the field in order to pass the exam. The average starting salary for a high pressure boiler operator is $42,000 in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
Upon completion of Refrigeration 608 training, students will be able to do a variety of things including identify components and explain the application and operation of the basic refrigeration cycle and heat transfer, test the equipment and demonstrate accepted refrigeration applications. The EPA Approved Refrigerant Handling Exam (EPA 608) is included in this free course. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible for immediate employment. The average median salary for an HVAC mechanic and installer is $52,500/year. Access to a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with an internet connection is required. Desktop computers are available on the CMCC campus.
Both programs are funded by the Maine Jobs and Recovery Program (MJRP). Participants are eligible for training and must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, GED or HiSet, and be US citizens and/or authorized to work in the United States. Criminal background checks and Covid vaccination records will be mandatory. Additionally, applicants for MJRP-funded programs must be dislocated, unemployed or underemployed workers, or someone whose employment has been affected by COVID-19. Underemployed people can be seen as working part-time but seeking full-time work or working in an occupation below their skills.
